Overtime is not inherently unhealthy. It can pay down debt, fund goals, cover staffing needs, and provide meaningful experience. The problem begins when saying yes becomes automatic and recovery becomes whatever time is left.

Know what the extra shift is buying

Specific goals make tradeoffs visible. “I am taking two extra shifts this month to pay for X” is different from permanently expanding the workweek because the extra income has become normal.

Watch identity creep

Some responders become uncomfortable when they are not working. The station feels easier than home. Being needed feels good. Coworkers become the primary social circle. None of that is automatically bad, but a resilient life benefits from more than one source of identity.

Track the downstream cost

Overtime can reduce sleep, exercise, patience, family time, appointments, hobbies, and the margin needed to recover from difficult calls. If those costs are chronic, the financial benefit may come with a health and relationship bill.

Use overtime intentionally. Decide what enough looks like before fatigue makes the decision for you.
