Peer support can listen and connect

A trained peer can create space for a private conversation, normalize common reactions, share appropriate resources, help someone think through next steps, and reduce isolation.

Peer support should not diagnose

Peers should not label coworkers with disorders, provide treatment beyond their training, promise absolute confidentiality when policy or law does not allow it, or become the only support person someone relies on.

Programs need structure

Selection, training, clinical consultation, confidentiality rules, referral pathways, documentation expectations, and leadership support should be clear before a crisis occurs.

A strong peer program is not evidence that the department has solved mental health. It is one part of a larger support system that should include competent leadership, professional care options, crisis procedures, and a culture that does not punish reasonable help-seeking.
