Burnout becomes more concerning when exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced effectiveness become the new baseline.

A bad week can make anyone exhausted, irritable, and ready to quit. Burnout is different because the pattern sticks. Rest does not restore you the way it used to. Cynicism spreads beyond one frustrating incident. Work begins to feel emotionally expensive before the shift even starts.

Look at duration and spread

Ask whether the problem improves after genuine rest and whether it stays contained to a specific event. A difficult supervisor, a stretch of mandatory overtime, or a painful call can produce intense short-term reactions. Burnout tends to spread into motivation, relationships, sleep, patience, and the sense that your work matters.

Supervisors should watch performance changes

Leaders do not need to diagnose burnout. They can notice changes: increased conflict, unusual absenteeism, missed details, withdrawal, risk-taking, or a previously engaged employee becoming flat and cynical. Address observable behavior, ask what support is needed, and use appropriate organizational resources.

Do not wait for collapse

If the pattern is persistent, reduce avoidable load where possible and get input early. That might include schedule changes, time off, peer support, medical care, mental-health support, or a candid conversation about what is making the job unsustainable.

Burnout is not a character flaw. It is a signal that demands, recovery, resources, and meaning have moved out of balance.
