Dark humor is common in high-stress professions for a reason. Shared laughter can break tension, restore perspective, and remind a team that they are still human after an abnormal event. The fact that humor can be healthy does not mean every joke is harmless.

Humor can create distance from intensity

A brief laugh after a difficult call can help release pressure and reconnect coworkers. It may also allow people to acknowledge something painful indirectly before they are ready to discuss it directly.

Watch who pays for the joke

Humor becomes corrosive when it targets vulnerable people, humiliates coworkers, reinforces harassment, or turns someone’s distress into entertainment. “That is just our culture” does not repair the impact.

Do not let humor become the only language

If every serious topic is immediately turned into a joke, the team may lose the ability to talk directly when something actually needs attention.

Healthy humor gives the group breathing room. Unhealthy humor creates another source of stress. Good teams know the difference and do not require people to tolerate disrespect as the price of belonging.
